Increased consumer interest in the environmental profile of products, particularly those related to the food and beverage sector, together with pressure from communities and local governments, has encouraged companies to move towards a sustainable and practical grape culture of wine production, and to disseminate the results obtained in order to improve consumer satisfaction. There are numerous impacts deriving from the production of wine, from the vineyard to the store shelf, passing through the production and packaging phases: the use of chemicals, the loss of biodiversity and natural environment, water scarcity, equal treatment of workers and impact on local communities. In order to objectively measure the impacts from both environmental and social point of view, and above all to monitor the results obtained, indicators have been implemented for each impact, some in common to other productive sectors, others created specifically for the wine sector. The present work examines impacts and solutions in the wine sector, and in particular the wide number of programs and certifications developed and launched in Italy to improve sustainability performances and their communication.
